How much does a dynamic QR code cost in 2026?

In our September 25, 2026 check, paid entry plans for dynamic QR codes ran from $5 a month (billed annually, 3 codes) to $25 a month (billed annually, 50 codes), and free tiers were capped at 2 to 10 codes. The sticker price matters less than two other numbers: what each code costs you, and what happens to your printed codes when you stop paying.

Why do dynamic QR codes cost money at all?

A static QR code stores its data in the pattern and needs nothing after it is printed, which is why it is usually free. A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead. Every scan hits the provider's server, which looks up the current destination, counts the scan and redirects, day and night, for as long as the code lives. You are paying for that server, the analytics, the malware checks on destinations and the ability to edit the code after printing. The static vs dynamic guide explains when you need one or the other.

What does each code actually cost?

Divide the monthly price by the number of dynamic codes included. It is a rough number, since plans also differ in features, but it removes the illusion of a cheap entry price on a plan with very few codes:

Approximate monthly cost per dynamic code (from the prices above)
PlanPrice per monthCodesPer code, per month
Scanova Lite (billed annually)$910about $0.90
QR TIGER Regular$712about $0.58
Flowcode Pro Plus (billed annually)$2550$0.50
QRTada Starter (monthly)$925$0.36
QRCodeChimp Starter (monthly)$9.9950about $0.20
Hovercode Pro€11100about €0.11
QR TIGER Advanced$16200$0.08
QRTada Pro (monthly)$19250about $0.08

QRTada is not the cheapest per code on every row, and we would rather say so. Per-code cost is only one line of the bill: scan caps, billing terms and what happens at cancellation can change the real cost far more.

Which hidden costs should you look for?

  • Annual-only billing: several providers only sell annual plans on most tiers (Uniqode, the higher tiers of QR Code Generator PRO, Scanova's listed prices). A "$9 a month" plan billed annually is a $108 commitment on day one.
  • Scan caps: 500 scans per code on QR TIGER's free tier, 1,000 scans a month on QRCodeChimp's free tier, 10,000 on QR Code Generator PRO's Starter. A busy restaurant table can hit a low cap quickly.
  • Paid add-ons: Uniqode lists a custom domain at $2,000 per domain per year on its Lite plan. Extra users, bulk creation and API access often sit on higher tiers.
  • Codes per month versus codes in total: Bitly counts new QR codes per month; most others count active codes.
  • The cancellation policy: if codes stop when you stop paying, the real price includes reprinting everything that carries them.

Are free and lifetime plans cheaper?

For a handful of codes, a free tier can be a genuinely good deal. Hovercode's free plan includes 3 dynamic codes with unlimited scans, and its pricing page says they never expire; QRCodeChimp's free plan includes 10 codes with 1,000 scans a month. If you need three codes for a small business, that may be all you need, and we would tell a friend the same.

One-time "lifetime" plans exist too: Scanova sells an Ultra Lite plan at $150, paid once, for a single dynamic code with lifetime validity. That makes sense for one permanent code, such as a memorial plaque, and much less for a business that will need ten codes next year. Read how "lifetime" is defined and whether editing and analytics are included.

What happens to the cost when you stop paying?

This is the line most comparisons skip. Scanova says a subscription is required to keep dynamic codes working. QR Code Generator's own blog says that if you stop paying, the links pause. Hovercode keeps your first 3 codes, QRCodeChimp your last 10, and Flowcode says its codes keep scanning. When codes stop, every menu, flyer, sign and package that carries them becomes useless at once, and a customer who lands on an error page may not try again. Our guide on how to cancel a QR code subscription covers what to do if you are already in that spot.

How do you estimate your real cost?

  1. Count the codes you will need over two years, not today: one per menu, sign, product line or campaign you want to track separately.
  2. Estimate your scans on your busiest code and check it against any scan cap.
  3. List the features you need (analytics detail, custom domain, bulk creation, team seats) and find the lowest tier that includes all of them.
  4. Convert everything to a yearly figure, including annual-only commitments.
  5. Add the reprint risk: if the provider stops codes on cancellation, add what it would cost to reprint the pieces carrying them.

The QR code size calculator is handy at this stage if you are also planning the print run, and the QR code analytics page shows what each plan measures.

What does QRTada cost?

Three plans, with unlimited scans on all of them: Starter at $9 a month for 25 dynamic codes, Pro at $19 for 250 codes, Business at $49 for 2,000 codes. Paid annually, they cost $79, $169 and $449 a year. Monthly plans have no commitment. The 7-day trial is $0 with a card, gives you every feature of the plan you pick, and sends a reminder 2 days before the first charge. With no plan at all, a free account lets you create 1 static QR code, no card needed. Details on the pricing page.

What you are really paying for is the lifetime guarantee: from your first payment, any code created or edited on a paid plan keeps redirecting to its last destination, for life, even after you cancel. That takes the reprint risk out of the calculation above.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dynamic QR code cost per month?

In our September 2026 check, paid entry plans ran from $5 to $25 a month, often billed annually, for 3 to 50 codes. Per code, that ranged from under $0.10 to about $0.90 a month.

Is there a free dynamic QR code?

Yes, with limits: Hovercode includes 3 dynamic codes on its free plan, QRCodeChimp 10 with a monthly scan cap, Flowcode 2. Check scan limits and what happens if you upgrade and later downgrade.

Why is a static QR code free and a dynamic one not?

A static code needs no server after printing. A dynamic code relies on the provider's server for every scan, for as long as it lives.

Is a one-time payment better than a subscription?

For a single permanent code, it can be. For a business that adds codes every year, a subscription with a clear policy on what happens when you stop is usually more flexible.

Does QRTada charge per scan?

No. Scans are unlimited on every plan; plans differ by the number of dynamic codes and features.
