Quiet zone
The quiet zone is the empty, light margin around a QR code. The ISO/IEC 18004 standard requires at least 4 modules of it on every side.

Example
On a 21 by 21 module code printed 1.2 inches wide, each module is about 0.057 inch: the margin must be at least 0.23 inch on each side, with no text or artwork.
Why it matters
Phones locate a code through the contrast between its edges and the empty space around it. Text, a photo or a frame touching the pattern confuses detection: the code scans slowly, or not at all. It is one of the most common failures on busy designs. The QRTada designer uses 4 modules by default; the QR code checker measures the margin of any existing file.
