Why a logo does not break the code
A QR code stores its data with built-in redundancy, thanks to Reed-Solomon error correction. At the highest level, H, about 30% of the pattern can be damaged or covered without stopping the scan. The logo uses part of that reserve. Denso Wave, the inventor of the QR code, publishes the four levels:

The rules the designer enforces for you
- Automatic H correction as soon as a logo is added; a logo without H is blocked.
- Logo capped at 30% of the area, with an optional white margin around it; above that, download is blocked.
- Measured contrast between modules and background: below 3:1 blocks, 3 to 4.5:1 warns.
- Inverted colors (light modules on dark): a warning, since some older readers cannot read them.
- Automatic re-read of the final render before every download, the way a phone would. An unreadable code cannot be downloaded.

Three common design mistakes
- Brand colors that are too light: pale yellow or pink on white drops below 3:1. Use the color for the frame and text, keep modules dark.
- A logo touching the eyes: the three large corner squares locate the code. Leave them alone.
- A trimmed margin to save space: without its 4 white modules, the code struggles on a busy background.
