The tel format and E.164 numbers
The code holds a tel URI, defined in RFC 3966. The number must be in international E.164 format: a plus sign, the country code, then the number with no spaces or punctuation.

E.164 works from anywhere, including for tourists and customers whose phones roam on another network. The designer converts whatever number you type.
What happens on scan
- iPhone: a banner offers to call the number; iOS always asks for confirmation before dialing.
- Android: the dialer opens with the number filled in, and the person taps the call button.
