For a static code, QRTada encodes SMSTO:, the format QR readers recognize most widely. A dynamic code uses a short link that redirects to an sms: address suited to the phone scanning it.

What a prefilled text can do

  • Get a callback: "CALLBACK" sent to a sales rep, who sees the customer's number arrive.
  • Enter a contest: one keyword per contest to count entries.
  • Vote: one code per option, each sending a different word.
  • Join an alert list: back-in-stock, open table, school closures.

A customer texting you first does not, on its own, give you permission to send marketing texts back later. Under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, marketing texts sent with an autodialer generally require prior express written consent, and carriers apply their own rules to business messaging through 10DLC registration. Explain next to the code what people sign up for, honor STOP replies, and have a lawyer review any recurring SMS program. This page is general information, not legal advice.

One code per keyword to count responses

The phone receiving the texts keeps no stats. To see how each placement performs, create one dynamic code per placement with its own keyword: "POSTER" on the train station poster, "FLYER" on the farmers market flyers. Then compare two numbers: scans per code in your stats, and texts received per keyword. The gap shows how many people opened the message without sending it. A big gap usually points to a prefilled text that is too long or an offer that is unclear.

Common mistakes

  1. A premium short code: the sender pays. Say so clearly, or use a regular mobile number.
  2. A long message: an SMS holds 160 characters, and only 70 as soon as an emoji appears. Keep a short keyword, one word in capitals is plenty.
  3. No reply planned: someone who texts "CALLBACK" expects a call. Decide who answers and how fast.

SMS or WhatsApp?

SMS works on every phone, with no app or account needed, which is why it still dominates in the US. WhatsApp allows richer exchanges (photos, voice notes) but assumes the person uses it, which is more common with international or Hispanic audiences. For a broad local audience, SMS is the safe bet; for ongoing chats with regulars abroad, the WhatsApp QR code is often handier.

Your codes keep working, even if you stop paying

Every code you create or edit on a paid plan keeps redirecting to its last destination, forever.

Static codes are included in every plan: they rely on no server and never expire.

Frequently asked questions

Does the text send automatically?

No. The message appears prefilled and the person has to tap Send.

Can the prefilled text include accents or emoji?

Accents work fine. Avoid emoji: they switch the message to a format that holds only 70 characters.

Should I use a short code or a regular number?

A regular 10-digit number is simplest for callbacks and small contests. Short codes suit high-volume national campaigns and require carrier approval.

Who pays for the text?

The sender, under their plan. Most US plans include unlimited texting.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, both open the Messages app with the number and text.

Can I change the keyword after printing?

Yes with a dynamic code, for example for a new contest.

Can I receive texts on a landline?

Only if your carrier supports texting on that number, which is still uncommon. Use a dedicated mobile or business texting number instead.
