The black background trap
For Halloween it is tempting to print an orange or white code on black. That is an inverted code: light modules on a dark background. Recent camera apps often read it, but not every scanner does, especially older ones and some scanners built into other apps. All six templates keep dark modules on a light background (white, cream or pale peach) and put the black and orange in the frame.

The orange call to action on the black frame of the party invitation belongs to the frame, not the code, so it plays no part in scanning.
Scanning in the dark
Halloween codes get scanned at night: on a porch, on a sidewalk, in a candle-lit room. The camera is short on light and focuses more slowly. Three things help: a bigger code than usual (go for about 1.6 in instead of 1.2 in for a scan from 12 in), matte paper that does not throw back the glare of the phone's flashlight, and a lit spot near the door or a string of lights. Skip glow-in-the-dark ink for the code itself: once the lights go off, it flips the contrast.
Scavenger hunts: codes that work with no signal
For a hunt around the yard or the block, the clue template uses a text QR code: the clue is written into the pattern and shows up with no data connection, so nobody gets stuck in a basement or a park with one bar. Keep clues to a sentence or two; the longer the text, the denser the pattern and the bigger you have to print it. Number the tags on the back so you can put them out in order next year.
QR code costumes: size and surface
A costume code is scanned up close but on a surface that moves and folds. Print it on iron-on transfer or a stiff patch sewn in place, never on fabric that wrinkles, and aim for at least 2 in across. A dynamic QR code lets you swap the surprise from one party to the next without remaking the costume.
