How much text fits in a QR code
ISO/IEC 18004 sets the maximum capacity, reached with the largest version (177 by 177 modules) and the lowest error correction:

Those are theoretical limits: such a code is unreadable below about 4 inches. QRTada caps text at 500 characters, and past 300 the pattern is already dense. Accented letters and symbols take two or more bytes in UTF-8, so they count extra.
Why a text code is always static
A text code shows its content without going online, so it is always static. That is its value where there is no signal: basements, parking garages, machine rooms, trailheads. If you need to edit the message after printing, you need an online page instead: a link page or a PDF will do.
What shows up on scan
- iPhone: the camera shows the first words in a banner; tap it for the full text, which you can copy or search.
- Android: depending on the brand, the camera or Google Lens shows the text with a copy button.
If the text contains a web address, the phone often makes it tappable. For a link, though, a URL QR code is more direct.

Writing text that reads well on a screen
The text shows raw, with no formatting: no bold, no headings, no images. Use short sentences and lead with the most useful information, because the iPhone banner only shows the first words. Line breaks are kept, so use them to separate steps. Avoid all caps, which reads slower and feels like shouting. For safety notes, two languages are fine as long as the whole thing stays under 300 characters. Scan your draft once on a phone before printing: reading it on a small screen shows at once what to cut.
Mistakes to avoid
- Too much text for the printed size: 400 characters on a 0.8 inch code will not scan. Shorten or enlarge.
- Sensitive information: anyone can read it. No passwords or door codes in plain text.
- Exotic characters: some older readers mangle emoji or non-Latin scripts. Test on several phones.
