UTM builder for QR codes
Add UTM tags to your QR code's destination and your analytics will tell which visits came from which flyer, poster or card.

Add UTM tags to your URL
Prefilled for print. Values are lowercased and spaces become dashes.
The page people should land on after scanning.
The piece: flyer, poster, business-card.
Keep "print" for everything printed.
The name of the push: fall-sale-2026, grand-opening.
To compare two versions or two drop-off spots.
Rarely useful for print.
Fill in the URL, source, medium and campaign to get your link.
Why UTM tags matter for QR codes
Someone who scans a QR code lands on your site with no referrer: to Google Analytics, they look like someone who typed the address by hand, lumped into "Direct". UTM parameters at the end of the URL give that visit a label. Google Analytics 4, Matomo, Umami and most analytics tools read them.

| Parameter | Role | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | The physical piece | flyer, poster, business-card, table-tent, window |
| utm_medium | Always the same for print | |
| utm_campaign | The push | fall-sale-2026, grand-opening |
| utm_content | Variant or location | north-side, version-b, austin-expo |
| utm_term | Keyword, mostly for paid search | (empty) |
Three rules prevent most unreadable reports: always lowercase (analytics treats "Flyer" and "flyer" as different), dashes instead of spaces, and a written list the whole team reuses. The tool applies the first two for you.
Example: three flyer drops, three results
A bakery prints 1,500 flyers for back to school: 500 handed out at the farmers market, 500 in neighborhood mailboxes, 500 at the school gate. Same campaign (back-to-school-2026), same source (flyer), same medium (print), but three utm_content values: market, mailbox, school, so three codes. A month later, the campaign report shows the school flyers brought twice as many online orders as the mailbox ones. The next drop focuses there. Without UTM tags, all three would have vanished into "Direct" traffic, and the bakery would have guessed instead of knowing.
In GA4, find these numbers under Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, with the session campaign and session manual ad content dimensions. In Umami, open the UTM report of your website. Give the data a few weeks: print campaigns build slowly, and one busy Saturday can skew a small sample.
UTM tags vs scan stats: two complementary numbers
A dynamic QR code's stats count scans: how many people pointed a phone at your piece, when, from which country. UTM tags measure what happens next on your site: page views, bookings, purchases. The gap between the two is telling: 300 scans and 40 recorded sessions often point to a slow page or a cookie banner that scares people off. The QR code analytics page explains how to read them together.
Common mistakes
- UTM tags on internal links: on your own site, they overwrite the visit's original source. Keep them for links coming from outside.
- A long URL inside a static code: UTM tags lengthen the address and densify the pattern. Put them behind a dynamic code, whose pattern never changes.
- A campaign name reused every year: add the year, or your comparisons blur together.
Once your URL is ready, turn it into a URL QR code. On Pro, a UTM builder is also built into each code's editor.
Frequently asked questions
Do UTM tags work with Umami or Matomo?
Yes, they are standard parameters. Umami and Matomo show them in their campaign reports.
Do UTM tags slow the page down?
No, they are plain URL parameters your server ignores.
Do UTM tags require a cookie banner?
The tags themselves store nothing. Your analytics tool might; a cookieless one like Umami does not need consent.
Are my URLs sent to QRTada?
No, the URL is built in your browser.
